How to Whip Up Embrocation in Your Own Kitchen – Bike Magazine Australia

Whether you use embro to warm up on a cold ride, keep them cool in the summer heat, or simply show off your hard-earned cycling muscles, it’s easy to make yourself at home. These recipes were created by Rachel Wolf, owner and founder of American brand Viroqua. She’s the herbalist behind Donkey Label’s cycling skin-care products.

The key ingredient: Essential oils, which can be found at most natural-food stores or online. Do your research before using any oils not listed here—some aren’t suitable for use on skin or in the sun.

All-Weather Blend 3 Tbsp oil (sunflower, grapeseed, and sweet almond are good choices) 1 Tbsp cocoa butter 2 tsp grated beeswax 5 drops frankincense essential oil

3 drops cedar essential oil

  • Combine oil, cocoa butter, and beeswax in a small, nonreactive (stainless steel or tin) pan. Warm over low heat until the beeswax melts. Remove from heat, cool slightly, and stir in the essential oils. Carefully pour into a clean, dry tin or jar. Allow to sit undisturbed until cool.
  • Check consistency. If you prefer a stiffer balm, remelt and add beeswax, 1 teaspoon at a time. For a thinner consistency, remelt and add oil, 1 tablespoon at a time. Pour back into tin or jar. Makes approximately 3 oz.
